Unconscious Bias and the Superpower of Mindfulness

Published: Monday, April 30, 2018

Unconscious bias has become central to the conversations about race and equity. We make decisions based on shortcuts in our brains that are shaped by history and experience. While we may be outraged when we see acts of racism or bigotry, we are not aware of those unconscious acts that perpetuate biases within ourselves, in our communities, in institutions and in structures. Imagine if we just slowed down and practiced mindfulness when making individual decisions or decisions in our workplaces, in our communities, and within power structures that exclude others based on stereotyping?

ALF-MVC Senior Fellows Tackle the Affordable Housing Crisis

Published: Wednesday, November 22, 2017

The lack of affordable housing is a region-wide crisis, as it spans multiple demographic groups.  The problem existentially has no boundaries, affecting those who are homeless, underemployed, immigrants, seniors, those with disabilities, veterans, emancipated foster youth, those who experience trauma, creatives, Millennials and young families just starting out. The solution must be multi-pronged and the response massive.

The Lure of the Tourist

Published: Tuesday, July 11, 2017
Wherever you see progress in diversifying our region's industry clusters, you'll find ALF Senior Fellows at the heart of it.  And tourism is no exception. In our ALF-Mountain Valley sphere of influence, tourism is seen as an instrument for regional development.

"Tourism is an industry that creates jobs. In fact, it is the one industry that can't be exported. You need the people to service visitors and that means those jobs remain in the community."

Nonprofits Need to Grow Like Businesses Do

Although its the 4th largest industry in California, generates $208 billion in annual revenue and employs nearly one million people, California nonprofits can't get no respect.

"I would say efficiency is the area where nonprofits need to concentrate. Efficiency is attractive to funders. They want impact in exchange for their support."
