The Drive

The Drive podcast, a production of Capital Public Radio and the American Leadership Forum - Mountain Valley Chapter, reveals the personal stories behind local changemakers. Host Katie McCleary (Class XIX) talks with leaders in the greater Sacramento area about the moments that made them who they are and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Katie McCleary, MFA, grew up in the wilds of Northern Idaho with a sibling with severe disabilities. Her childhood experiences of living in rural America shaped her into a writer and storycoach who is driven to make the world less lonely and more connected through the sharing of authentic stories by a multiplicity of voices. She is the force behind the creation of 916 Ink, an innovative literacy nonprofit in the greater Sacramento region that she founded in 2010. In 2014, Katie was named one of Sacramento’s 40 Under 40 by the Sacramento Business Journal. In 2015, named Katie one of 15 "Real Miss America's" in the nation for her work with vulnerable populations. In 2016, she began a prison writing project at Old Folsom prison with 40 incarcerated men. In 2017, she launched “River Rock Books,” a publishing company dedicated to bringing Sacramento voices to market. Her latest company, Paper Wings Creative, takes groups of busy people on creative reprieves to refill their cups. Her creative work has appeared in Hip Mama, Susurrus, The Tule Review, Sacramento Magazine, and Sacramento News and Review. She serves on the school board of Visions in Education, is a Senior Fellow with the American Leadership Forum and a national facilitator in the Amherst Writers and Artists’ Method.
